Nathan's Cabbage

Back in April, Nathan brought home a plant start from school. It was in a little paper cup with two sprouts budding out of the dark soil. He couldn't tell me fast enough about the 3rd Grade Cabbage Program his school was doing. They had been learning about plants in science. They talked about photosynthesis, the plant structure and function. They even disected a plant, but the best part of this unit was bringing home a cabbage start to plant in our garden. It's a competition with all the other 3rd graders in our state.
So we waited for a few weeks for the snow to melt and we planted it in our garden. Last month we measured the diameter, took a picture and sent it in to his 3rd grade teacher. I was contacted a few days ago that he was a finalist for his school and would like us to weigh it. It ended up being 37.5 lbs! That's more than our 3 year old Megan! Wow, well wish us luck. If Bonnie Plants chooses his plant, the award is $1,000.00 scholarship money. Most likely we won't win, but it was sure a fun project that Nathan put his whole heart into. I am so grateful for teachers who inspire and motivate our children even out of the classroom!
